“August 3rd, 976
My mortal hands cannot save mortal lives from the hands of other mortals. All I can do is ease the pain of their immortal souls, yet I fear there are still people in Roma who are without the Lord’s comfort. Therefore, I decided to venture into the city after dusk to perhaps ease their pain and my own.
To my astonishment, I heard a cry! It was an infant’s, so pure and sweet compared to the pained groans of soldiers on their deathbed. I could not find its source, cursed be this feeble body of mine. However, its existence has brought a grain of peace into my heart, for I have finally seen a road to atonement. His majesty will adopt the child to teach it honor, and I will teach it virtue. Not Magistarian or Reformist or Caudar virtue, but human virtue.”
